HowTo Help Prevent Your Clothes Dryer From Burning Down Your House
It is True that clothes dryers cause over 7000 homes to burn down each year. Here's what you can do to help prevent this occurence in your home.
Any appliance has the potential to start a fire, but today I'm going to talk about clothes dryers. Whether it is gas or electric these dryers produce alot of heat. One of the dangers in starting a fire comes from the lint build up down inside the machine. Over the course of around six years a great deal of lint can accumulate inside the machine where you can't even see it. Lint also builds up in the vent piping in the wall and in the attic, which contributes to a hazardous condition. This goes without saying that the lint also gets into the moving parts, causing premature wear.
It is advisable to have your dryer and venting cleaned out every six years. This reduces risk of fire and it makes your clothes dryer run more efficiently, saving on your energy bill and your time.
Some key things to look for in knowing if your dryer needs to be cleaned are as follows;
If it is taking too long for your clothes to get dry. This is an obvious sign your dryer venting is restricted and should be clean out as soon as possible. This condition will ultimately cause the electric heating coil to burn out.
One way to confirm there is a restriction is to open the door while the machine is running. If you are hit in the face by very hot and humid air then you have restriction.
Finally, if you are noticing lint on the back side of your filter. This is an indication the air flow has become turbulent, which is caused by restricted flow down the hose and/or piping.
