So your AC was working fine and then without warning you notice it isn't blowing cold or maybe it really isn't blowing much at all. If your AC isn't blowing air or is blowing little air the first thing to look at is the fan motor in the air handler or the evaporator section of the AC. This is where you can check to see if the fan motor has failed or is the evaporator coils have maybe iced over. Once covered with ice the fan motor can no longer move any air through them and if it can't pull air then it won't push any either. Ice can be the result of dirty air filter or a dirty evaporator coil, or it can be caused by a slow moving fan. These are the most common causes which are pretty easy and direct as far as a repair is concerned. Another cause is when there is a refrigerant leak and the system loses enough pressure that the coils are getting colder than their design purpose. Refrigerant leaks can be easy to find and fix or they can be very difficult and in the case of the evaporator or condenser coils leaking it is often more practicle to replace the coil rather than digging around in them like an experimental operation.

But even if there is a refrigerant leak often it will be small enough to use a stop leak product and even if it does require a major repair there is a chance that topping off the system can get you up and going through the summer..
